In the early 1990s, a group of visionary members of the Oromo diaspora, residing in Toronto, Canada, conceived an ambitious idea: the creation of an Oromo Sports Federation in North America. This concept, born out of a desire to foster community cohesion and celebrate Oromo heritage, took tangible form in 1996 when the inaugural OSFNA (Oromo Sports Federation in North America) soccer tournament was launched in the vibrant city of Toronto.

Six clubs eagerly participated in this landmark event, representing various regions across North America: Rissa from Minnesota, Madaa Walabuu from Seattle, Oromia from Toronto, Odaa from Canada, Barisaa from Atlanta, and Bakalcha from Ottawa. The tournament not only showcased the talent and passion for soccer within the Oromo community but also served as a rallying point for cultural exchange and unity.

Buoyed by the success of the inaugural tournament, the second annual OSFNA event in 1997 heralded a promising future. The enthusiastic response from both soccer clubs and fans alike demonstrated a growing momentum within the community. Such rapid expansion necessitated the formal establishment of the OSFNA Board through democratic elections, marking a significant milestone in the organization's journey.

Since its inception in 1996, OSFNA has consistently captivated the attention of Oromo diaspora members year after year, offering a rich tapestry of cultural and sporting events. Beyond the exhilarating soccer matches, these gatherings have become cherished opportunities for Oromos to reconnect with their roots, celebrate their identity, and forge lasting bonds across borders.
